Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
GEO - Generative Engine Optimisation - is the discipline of optimising content so AI engines cite it as a source. Where SEO optimises for a ranking algorithm, GEO optimises for a synthesis: the answer engine reads your page, decides it's the best source for the claim, and names it. It borrows heavily from classic SEO - crawlability, clarity, authority - but adds the specific levers that make content quotable: direct answers, named entities, structured data, statistics, and authors with visible expertise.
Why It Matters
The stakes are simple: a growing share of search queries never produce a click. When an answer engine answers the question, the winning brand is the one it cited - not the one that ranked third and got skipped. Being the cited source builds the kind of visibility that compounds: every answer that names you is an impression, and enough impressions become the default answer.
GEO also rewards what SEO has always rewarded - genuinely good content. There's no magic GEO trick that makes mediocre content quotable. The engines are trained to favour sources that read like they know what they're talking about. If your content is already the best answer, GEO is mostly about making that obvious to machines.
In Practice
Answer the actual question, clearly, in the first paragraph - quote-ready, not buried. Name your sources and your numbers; answer engines prefer claims they can verify. Make entity relationships explicit (schema, consistent names, author bios) so the engine can attribute the answer to you. Let the AI crawlers in. Monitor what the engines say about you and your competitors, and treat a citation the way you'd treat a ranking.
Don't repurpose your whole strategy around it. GEO is a layer on top of solid SEO, not a replacement. The businesses winning GEO are the ones winning SEO - with content that's genuinely quotable on top.
Common Mistakes
Pursuing GEO as a gimmick - stuffing answers and citations into thin content hoping the engines will parrot it. They don't. Or ignoring it entirely and letting competitors become the cited source for your own industry's questions.
