AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google's AI-written summaries shown above traditional results for many queries. Google synthesises answers from content across the web, cites sources inline, and answers the question without a click. For anything with informational intent, the overview is now the first thing a searcher sees - and for a growing share of queries, it's the last.

Why It Matters

AI Overviews didn't replace the SERP. They became the top of it. That changes what 'ranking' means: a position-one blue link underneath an AI Overview competes with an answer that's already been given. For commercial queries the overviews are thinner and the links still matter, but for informational intent they're eating clicks at scale - the same way featured snippets did, only bigger.

This is why the fundamentals matter more, not less. AI Overviews cite sources that are crawlable, well-structured and genuinely authoritative. If your content is technically broken, thin or buried, the overview has no reason to cite you. If it's the best answer to the question, the overview becomes free referral traffic to a page you own.

In Practice

Optimise for being cited, not just ranked. Write the direct answer to the question early in the page - the first paragraph, not paragraph nine. Use the language your customers actually search (the overview draws from pages that match query phrasing). Keep the page crawlable: no JS-gated content, working structured data, clean internal links so Googlebot finds and trusts the page.

Don't chase the overview at the expense of the result that converts. An AI Overview citation is visibility; the click-through to your own page is still where revenue happens. Win the citation and give the searcher a reason to click anyway - a better answer, a comparison, a price, a proof point the overview can't fit.

Common Mistakes

Writing for AI Overviews instead of for people - answer-stuffed paragraphs that satisfy the overview but bore the reader. Or treating overviews as a threat to ignore. They're a distribution channel; ignoring them means letting competitors be the cited source.
