AI Search (Answer Engines)
AI search engines - answer engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot - take a question, synthesise an answer from sources across the web, and cite them inline. They don't show a ranked list to click; they show an answer. Search behaviour is splitting: people still use Google for transactional queries, and they increasingly ask AI for answers to questions. Both now matter to organic visibility.
Why It Matters
Answer engines changed the contract. Google ranks pages; AI engines rank citations. If your content is the source an answer engine draws from, you get named as the reference - which builds brand awareness and trust even when no click happens. If it's not, you're invisible to an entire category of search demand that's growing fast.
The engines are also honest about their preferences: they crawl like traditional search engines, they reward clear, citable, well-structured content, and they prefer sources with genuine authority over thin aggregation. The tactics that win Google largely win the answer engines - but there are new levers: being quoted, being cited as a named source, and publishing content that reads like it was written by someone who knows what they're talking about (because it was).
In Practice
Write the kind of content an answer engine wants to cite: direct answers, named statistics, clear claims with sources, expert authors. Make it crawlable (robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot). Keep pages fast and accessible - AI crawlers are less forgiving of JavaScript-heavy sites. Monitor AI mentions the way you'd monitor rankings - ask Perplexity and ChatGPT what they say about your brand and your competitors' brands, and see whose content they cite.
Don't stop doing SEO. The answer engines still reward technical health, authority and relevance - they just reward them slightly differently. The businesses winning AI search are the ones that were already winning real search, with the extra step of being genuinely quotable.
Common Mistakes
Blocking AI crawlers out of fear, or ignoring answer engines as 'not real search'. Both are wrong. They send real referral traffic and they shape brand perception. The smarter play is being findable and quotable.
