Glossary

Claude

Claude is Anthropic's large language model family, powering Claude.ai and used across research and analysis workflows. Claude doesn't run a mainstream search product the way Perplexity does, but it's a major way people now research - users paste questions, content and data into it constantly, and it synthesises what it's given. For SEO, Claude matters twice: as a reader of your content in research workflows, and as the model behind a growing set of AI assistants that answer questions with web access.

Why It Matters

Claude matters for visibility beyond traditional search. The person researching vendors, evaluating your site, or asking 'who's the best SEO agency for finance' may ask Claude - and its answer shapes their decision. Being findable, quotable and impressive-in-content is what makes the model's answer mention you favourably.

It also matters for how you operate. Claude-class models are the local-AI workhorses for research, drafting and analysis - the same systems that keep client data private while producing the grunt work. Understanding the models isn't just about being visible to them; it's about using them properly on your own side of the fence.

In Practice

Make your content the kind Claude would quote: clear claims, named data, expert authors. Keep ClaudeBot allowed in robots.txt so the model can retrieve your pages in research. Test how Claude describes your brand and your industry, and publish content that corrects any wrong answers by being the definitive source.

Use the models where they're genuinely better - synthesis, drafting, analysis - and keep the judgment human. The operators who win the AI era are the ones who deploy the tools well, not the ones who fear or worship them.

Common Mistakes

Blocking ClaudeBot without thinking, or ignoring the model as a visibility surface because it's not a search engine. Any place people research your industry is a place your content should be findable.
