AI Content Generation

AI content generation is using large language models to produce content - drafts, outlines, variations, rewrites - at a scale and speed no human team can match. The models handle the grunt work; the human decides what gets written, whether it's any good, and whether it earns its place on the site. That division of labour is the whole argument: AI makes volume nearly free, so the value moves entirely to judgment.

Why It Matters

AI content generation changed the economics of content marketing. The cost of a draft fell from hours to seconds, which collapsed the value of volume-based agencies - the ones selling ten blog posts a month as if output were the product. What it didn't change is the cost of deciding: what to write, what angle, what's worth publishing, whether it satisfies the searcher. That judgment is now the entire competitive advantage.

It also created a quality bar problem. Everyone can generate content now, so the market is flooded with it - and Google's systems are built to filter mass-produced content that doesn't help. The generated content that ranks is the generated content that a human made genuinely useful. The tool amplifies quality; it doesn't create it.

In Practice

Use AI for research synthesis, drafting and structural outlining - the parts that are work. Spend the saved time on what models can't do: strategy, judgment, originality, verification. Never publish raw output; the difference between a draft and a finished page is exactly the value you add.

Add what models can't generate: original data, expert perspective, specific examples, real results. That's the content AI systems cite and humans trust. The workflow that wins is human-led strategy with AI-assisted production and human-quality review.

Common Mistakes

Publishing AI output with no human layer and calling it content, or scaling volume while quality collapses - the exact pattern Google's helpful content systems are built to filter. Generate to augment judgment, not replace it.
