Semrush

Semrush is an all-in-one SEO suite: keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits, rank tracking, backlink analysis and advertising research in one platform. It's the tool for seeing the whole landscape in one place - your rankings, your competitors' positions, and the keyword opportunities between you. Where niche tools go deep on one job, Semrush trades a little depth for breadth.

Why It Matters

Semrush matters for the competitive view. The keyword gap report shows exactly which terms your competitors rank for that you don't; the position tracking shows both your movement and theirs; the site audit finds technical issues before they bite. For a business managing SEO in-house or with an agency, it's the common dashboard where strategy decisions get made.

It also matters for the discovery side. Topic research, related keywords, question-based searches - the tools suggest angles you didn't have on the list, which is how content strategies grow past the obvious terms.

In Practice

Run the keyword gap against your real competitors - the ones winning your customers, not the biggest names in your industry. Set position tracking on revenue keywords and review the trend weekly. Use the site audit for the technical layer and fix what it flags in priority order.

Remember the estimates are estimates. Volume, difficulty and traffic numbers are modelled, not measured - verify the ones that matter with Search Console and your own analytics before you commit budget to them.

Common Mistakes

Letting the tool generate strategy instead of supporting it - chasing keywords because Semrush says they're easy, or reading its authority scores as Google's opinion. It's a map; you still have to decide where to go.
