GTmetrix
GTmetrix is a page-speed testing tool built around the waterfall - the visual breakdown of every request a page makes, in order, with its size and load time. Where Lighthouse gives you scores, GTmetrix gives you the autopsy: the script that blocks rendering, the image that's three times too big, the third-party widget that adds two seconds. It's the tool for finding out why a score is bad, not just that it is.
Why It Matters
Speed fixes need specifics. 'LCP is 4 seconds' tells you there's a problem; the waterfall tells you it's that unoptimised hero image or that render-blocking font. GTmetrix turns performance work from guessing to fixing - you can see the exact request that's costing the second.
It also shows what's new. Third-party scripts change, ad tags grow, analytics get heavier. The waterfall reveals the creep - the ten requests that weren't there last year and are now part of every page load. Catching the creep is how sites stay fast instead of getting fast and drifting back.
In Practice
Test the pages that earn revenue on the connection and device your real users have - mobile, throttled, not your fibre office connection. Read the waterfall in order: the blocking requests at the top, the oversized resources, the third-party scripts. Fix the biggest offenders first - one huge image beats ten tiny tweaks.
Re-test after every deploy. The waterfall changes with every release, and the regression you don't catch today is the slow site you're explaining next quarter.
Common Mistakes
Testing from your office connection and calling it fast, or staring at the total score instead of the waterfall. The score is a summary; the waterfall is the truth.
